Hello! I'm Naren, a Data Science Ph.D. student at the New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) under the supervision of Dr. James Geller and Dr. Lijing Wang. My research lies in the domain of Biomedical ontologies, with a focus primarily on Incremental Ontology Expansion and Concept Goodness. Alongside my research, I am an Adjunct Instructor teaching Database System Design and Management (CS 331) and a Teaching Assistant for graduate level courses.

Full biography
Hello! I'm Naren, a Data Science Ph.D. student at the New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) under the supervision of Dr. James Geller and Dr. Lijing Wang. My research lies in the domain of Biomedical ontologies, with a focus primarily on Incremental Ontology Expansion and Concept Goodness. Alongside my research, I am an Adjunct Instructor teaching Database System Design and Management (CS 331) and a Teaching Assistant for graduate level courses.
Before moving to Biomedical Ontologies, I explored the domain of Parallel and High Performance Computing as a Graduate Researcher at NJIT. My professional journey also took me to Forbes Media LLC during the Summer of 2022. As a Technology Engineering Intern at Forbes, I collaborated with the Platform & Product Engineering Team, significantly enhancing their Content Management System and initiating the development of the new Mobile Application for Forbes Daily Dozen Newsletter.
Apart from my academic commitments, I am a GitHub Campus Expert, where I build diverse and inclusive communities to learn skills, collaborate on projects, and share experiences. Through this platform, I introduce students to promising research domains and organize collaborative events in partnership with GitHub, Association of Computing Machinery (ACM) - NJIT chapter & Graduate Women in Computing (GWiCS) focusing on open-source learning and innovation.

- Fall 2024 and Summer 2025
- Teach CS 331: Database System Design and Management, covering key concepts such as database design, SQL programming, normalization, and transaction management, providing both theoretical and practical knowledge
- Develop comprehensive course materials and assessments, ensuring students gain a robust understanding of database systems and are well-prepared for real-world applications in the domain
- Teaching Assistant for CS 632: Advanced Database System Design, CS 331: Database System Design and Management, DS 636: Data Analytics with R programming, DS 644: Introduction to Big Data, and CS 434: Advanced Database Systems
- Conduct weekly consultations during dedicated office hours to address graduate student questions and provide clarifications
- Assess and grade student assignments and homework, providing timely and accurate feedback
- Conducted research on Arkouda – a software package that allows a user to interactively issue massive parallel computations on distributed data using functions and syntax that mimic NumPy, the underlying computational library used in most Python data science workflows
- Evaluated user experience and performed performance benchmarking against existing data science workflows
- Improved the User Interface of the Content Management System Bertie by creating Angular components per the Product Design Team – improved user interaction with the CMS by seventy percent
- Contributed to the pilot team responsible for the iOS and Android Development of the Forbes Mobile Application
- Developed the architecture for Multivendor Call to Action feature to increase the customer conversion rate by fifty percent
- Worked with the Network Operations Center (NOC) and improved the workflow of Building Management System (BMS) by visualizing the existing Chiller Plants’ data using Python
- Improved data-handling efficiency with the use of Python scripts saving six to eight hours of manual scraping of data in CSV files generated by the client data of the Data Center

- GitHub Campus Experts are student leaders that strive to build diverse and inclusive communities to learn skills, collaborate on projects, and share their experiences
- Founded the NJIT HPC Initiative and collaborate with NJIT student organizations including Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) and Women in Computing Society (WiCS) to organize technical events and expand the campus developer community
- Organized 14+ technical workshops, hackathons, and Capture the Flag (CTF) competitions focused on GitHub, artificial intelligence, and software development (Event Portfolio)
- Led campus outreach and marketing initiatives to increase awareness and adoption of Perplexity AI among students
- Collaborated with WiCS and other student organizations to organize campus activations, AI demonstrations, and community engagement events
- Worked closely with the Perplexity leadership team and fellow Campus Strategists to gather user feedback, promote AI literacy, and expand the student AI community
- Mentored admitted graduate students by connecting with them and answering their questions
- Organizing events on campus to spread awareness about Parallel Computing being a viable research domain alongside Chapel Programming Language
